This Spring Virginia was crawling in Cicadas! Seemed they were everyone. Apparently this variety hatched several years early. Usually we know the cicadas are out because of the constant hum we hear coming from the trees... this year it sounded more like a car alarm always going off! And they were everywhere. Crawling up the sides of buildings, on the sidewalks, the grass, tree trunks... so many within reach. So much fun for Sawyer!
Then our neighbor Kim brought us some special chocolates. Chocolate covered, grilled cicadas! Bridger and Sawyer gladly tried them. Devin ate one. I even tried one. Only Myra refused. Sawyer kept begging for more!
This started a new food trend in our house that weekend. The boys would go hunting for cicadas, and Devin started frying them up! Eat the whole thing, wings and all.
Sharing Cicadas with friends
Our house transformed into Fear Factor over the course of a couple hours. Devin was successful at getting McKenna, our babysitter, Brandon and his kids, plus his nieces and nephews, to try it. The next day Devin served them up to his Sunday school class.
One chocolate covered cicada was enough for me but the boys found their new favorite delicacy right in our backyard!
