Oops...

I almost burned down the apartments today.  Luckily all that burned were my pita chips.

Well sometimes I make my own chips.  I just get whole wheat pita's, put some olive oil on them, cut them up, and broil them in the oven.  They don't taste like Tostitos, but they are whole wheat, baked, and so much healthier than any chips you can find in the grocery store.
Normally I broil them, but I read that you can bake them too.  So I started baking my chips and then decided to broil them to give them the final touches of crispiness.  I turned the oven on broil, (and this is where I should have stood by, and only let them broil for a minute while I watched) I added two minutes on the timer and left the kitchen.  (Oops).  When I came to pull out my chips, the oven was smoking.  I yanked open the oven door and this huge flame shot out!  It was a good thing Devin was home for lunch because I was too dumbfounded and shocked to think what to do about it beside yell for his help.  He came and threw a bunch of water on my house fire and saved our apartment!
My chips were completely charred, our fire-alarms went bonkers, and even though we've left our windows open all day, our apartment now smells like a campfire.  Yeah, next time I'll remember not to do that.

(Yep, looking crispy! I didn't take this picture until after I had already thrown half of them in the garbage.)
If you want to try to make your own pita chips, may I suggest to keep the oven door open (!) while you broil and watch them the whole time your chips cook.
You can bake them at 450 degrees.  Before my chips were ablaze, it looked like four minutes on one side, flip them, and then four minutes on the other side would be about right.
Or to broil, it only takes about 1.5- 2 minutes on each side.  Hope yours don't look like mine today.
